About Manipedia

Who runs this site, how we work, and what we will and will not do.

What this is

Manipedia is an encyclopedia of manipulation techniques: propaganda, disinformation, scams and the psychology that makes them work. One short page per technique, written in plain language, designed to be linked under the post that uses it.

The idea is simple. Most people have met most of these tricks. Few have a name for them. A name turns a vague feeling that something is off into something you can point at, explain to a friend, and recognise next time.

Who runs it

Manipedia is an independent project run from Budapest, Hungary. It is not a registered non-profit, not part of any party, government, company or campaign, and not funded by any of them. It is one small team with a website.

The English entries are the reference version. Hungarian is the first translation; more languages will follow as volunteers join. Every translation is reviewed by at least one trusted native speaker besides the translator before it goes live (see how to contribute).

About the tricks, not the parties

We don’t take political sides. We show how a trick works, whoever is using it. That’s why the examples come from across the political spectrum: every side uses these tools. Where we name a specific campaign, such as pro-Kremlin disinformation documented in the EU’s EUvsDisinfo database, it’s because the evidence is public, and we cite it.

If you think an entry is unfair, slanted or wrong, tell us. Every justified correction goes in.

What we will not do

  • Tell you what to think about any party, candidate or policy.
  • Invent quotes or attribute statements to real people without a source.
  • Accept money to write, change or remove an entry.
  • Auto-redirect you based on where you are or what your browser says. You choose the language.

Reuse
